Liposuction Plastic Surgery
liposuction the most common aesthetic procedure performed worldwide and in India as well. This has also happened due to increased peer pressure, changing lifestyles, expected outcomes and the increased safety associated with these procedures.
Fat accumulation happens due to an unbridled life style, dietary indiscretion or both. Women who have gone through childbirth also find themselves in such a situation due to difficulty in losing weight and having stretch marks and loose skin in addition.
Liposuction Techniques
Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) - traditional and time tested method of liposuction. Finer canulas and better techniques have resulted in vastly improved results. SAL is the gold standard in liposuction techniques even now.
Ultrasound Assisted Lipectomy (UAL) - utilizes ultrasound energy to break the fat cells before suctioning them out. Advantages include decreased effort for the surgeon and probably less amount of blood loss. However, increased chances of fluid collection and skin damage exist.
Liposuction Procedure
Most liposuctions at our centre are performed under general anesthesia. Liposuction, especially small volume can be performed under I.V sedation and local anesthesia too. General anesthesia is safe and increases patients as well as the surgeon’s comfort during circumferential one stage body contouring, which is our preference. It helps us achieve full definition in 3 dimension.
Tumescent and super wet techniques are used depending on the volume of aspirate expected. Tiny access points (2-3 mm) are made in natural creases or within bikini line through which the wetting solution is infiltrated. The fat is then aspirated using a fine canulas and smooth controlled action. The commonly treated areas are – abdomen, hips, thighs, love handles, saddle bags, inner thighs, buttocks, upper and lower back and the arms. The under chin area and the jaw line are commonly addressed on the face. The amount of fat removed will depend on the areas addressed and the volume of fat deposited. Up to 18 liters can be removed in well selected cases- only in a hospital setting. The access points are closed with one stitch across, which are removed on the 7th day
Post Surgery
A custom made pressure garment/corset (made of Lycra and cotton) will be put on immediately after the surgery. The garment is to be worn for a month after surgery, 24 hours a day. The corset is not to be removed for the first 5 days.
Post surgery sequels include swelling, bruising and bearable discomfort. These are temporary and should disappear over a few weeks. You can return to work in 3-4 days and can start heavy physical activity in 4 weeks.
Complications are unusual following liposuction. Seroma, pigmentation, minor irregularities, temporary loss of sensation, blood clots and skin ulcerations have been reported. Major complications like fluid overload, embolism and shock are rare when safety regulations are adhered to.
